Resolutions for life in the moment

New Year’s resolution is a tradition for many people, whether you are changing an unpleasant behavior or beginning a new personal goal to improve your life. The desire to set resolutions, especially a long-term goal, might be more of a challenge this year without a clear picture of what lays ahead due to the pandemic. But, the truth is, do you ever really have a clear picture of your future? The celebration of the new year is the perfect opportunity to be mindful of where we are in the present as we prepare for what’s to come. To that end, this year, why not focus resolutions for life in the moment?

New Year’s is a time for new beginnings. It is completely up to you how you want to tell your story in this new chapter. How great is that? You can begin to create an immediate goal by asking yourself: What is it that you really want in your life right now? Plus, setting intentions on an immediate goal can do wonders to minimize stress. Here, immediate resolutions for life in the moment to consider.

Cultivating a good relationship with yourself

It is important to focus on self-care and making time for yourself. Start a new hobby, stay creative and remain focused on something positive. Create a list to identify what makes you happy and also discover what doesn’t. This allows you to start to make choices from a place of clarity and happiness.

Connect daily with something bigger than yourself

Although your challenges are real and need attention with self-care, you should remember that some things are bigger than yourself. Try and redirect some time and energy to an act of kindness to a friend, neighbor or stranger. You can offer local support to the vulnerable shopping for groceries or to drop off a meal. Utilize your expertise or talent in a positive way and volunteer in your community. For example, virtual tutoring or organizing support groups.

Reach out to a colleague to let them know you are thinking of them.

You will cultivate joy and self-worth while helping someone else in need.

Connect to your mind, body and soul

Begin a new spiritual practice to help clear some of the chaos in your mind. Implement a simple mindfulness practice (it’s easier than you think!). Begin when you wake up in the morning before checking texts and emails. Take three deep breaths in and out and ask yourself; “What is my intention for today?” For example, “Today I will be kind to myself”.  Embrace the season with outdoor activities and exercise to connect with nature. Listen to your favorite music, podcasts and audiobooks. There is now an Apple App solely dedicated to podcasts. It can offer noteworthy recommendations and there is a browse section to offer something that may spark your interest!

Connect with your tribe (family and friends)

Be creative in ways to stay connected to your friends and loved ones. You can take a virtual workout class together or invite a family member to have a facetime lunch with you. Allow some traditions to evolve into new ones. Reconnect with old friends and acquaintances.  Be mindful of those who are alone this year and reach out with compassion. Let someone know how much you love and appreciate them.

Cheers to a new year!

Toast to a new year’s resolution that is unique to whatever you may want in your life right now. Take a deep breath during the last moment of 2020 and exhale as we enter 2021 into your new chapter. Together let’s ring in the new year with unity, peace and hope.

Happy New Year to all!
